Background

  • Introduced from Europe
  • Inflorescence tumbles with wind
  • Produces 50 to 100,00 seeds per plant
  • Associated with dry areas
  • Found from grasslands to open Ponderosa Pine communities

Description

  • Biennial, mature plant can reach 3 feet tall
  • Leaves ovate to triangular, irregularly lobed, 4 to 12 inches long
  • Stems, new leaves, and leaf lower surfaces are densely covered with fine, white woolly hairs.
  • Flowering stems highly branched near the top into broad panicles with whorls of 5-10 flowers.
  • Flowers white to yellowish
  • Crushed leaves have sage odor.
