| Dave Hallinan explains how to identify Dyer's Woad in the rosette stage where it has not bolted or with flowers like the nearby mature plants. At this stage it looks pretty much like other plants but the easiest way to distinguish it is the green leaf with the prominent white vein going right down the middle of it. He notes that the leaves pretty much lay flat on the ground and this is a big rosette. He also notes that this may be one of the biannual type plants which will stay like this most this season and next spring it will bolt.
Dave explains that another plant that is easy to confuse with Dyer's Woad is Arrowleaf Balsamroot which has a similar leaf. But if you look for the white vein going down the center it will really help identify this weed.
