Root System Video

Brian Wilbur, Bryan Dallolio and Roger Batt are digging up a shovel full of the Whitetop plant to look at its root system. Brian Wilbur suggests that they will probably find that the root systems of the plants are all connected together. They all come off one or a few main roots and the plants spread and come up in bunches from this rhizomonous, or spreading root system. Roger Batt asks how deep do the roots typically go under the ground? Brian Wilbur notes that these perennial root systems can go very deep. He has seen places where they used a backhoe and were down 10 to 12 feet and the roots just kept going. They never reached the end so he really does not know the answer, but he estimates greater than 10 feet.
